Day 6 of Building My Clothing Brand: Deciding What to Charge π°π€
Day 6 β and today we're talking MONEY.
Finally, something my finance brain can sink its teeth into. π
Over the last few days, I've been choosing colors, creating my first BZ pieces, making product mockups and building my Shopify pages.
But eventually every product needs one very important thing:
A PRICE.
And today I'm figuring out exactly what Bezi should charge.
Pricing Isn't Just Picking a Number
Before building my clothing brand, it would have been easy to look at a pair of leggings and think:
βOkay...$39.99 sounds good.β
But I'm learning very quickly that pricing a clothing brand involves a lot more than choosing a number that feels right.
There are actual costs behind every sale.
Product cost.
Printing and fulfillment.
Shipping.
Platform and payment fees.
Marketing.
Discounts.
Returns.
And, of course...
Profit.
Because as much as I LOVE building Bezi, this is still a business.
Affordable Doesn't Mean Underpriced
This is something I'm really thinking about today.
I want Bezi to offer pieces that feel accessible and worth the money.
But I also don't want to fall into the trap of thinking the cheapest price automatically gives customers the best value.
I'm building a brand.
That means I need enough margin to continue investing in better products, samples, content, marketing and eventually growing Bezi into something much bigger.
A business that doesn't make money can't keep serving its customers.
My finance degree is definitely showing today. π
So...How Am I Choosing My Prices?
I'm looking at several things before deciding what a product should sell for.
What does the product actually cost me?
What other expenses come with making the sale?
What are similar activewear brands charging?
What would I personally be willing to pay?
Does the quality justify the price?
And finally:
Does the price leave enough profit to actually grow the business?
I'm trying to find that sweet spot between:
βThat's a great price!β
and
βThis business can actually survive.β
I'm Not Trying to Be the Cheapest Activewear Brand
That's another decision I'm making.
I don't want Bezi competing solely on price.
There will almost always be someone willing to sell something cheaper.
Instead, I want Bezi to compete through the brand, designs, shopping experience, product selection and community we're building around it.
I want someone to buy BZ because she genuinely wants BZ.
Not simply because it was the cheapest pair of leggings she could find.
That's a very different business.
Profit Isn't a Bad Word
I think sometimes small-business owners almost feel guilty talking about profit.
But I'm building Bezi because I have a bigger goal.
I want to create additional income.
I want more financial freedom.
I want to build something that can grow.
And ultimately, I want more control over how I spend my time with my family.
That can't happen if I'm selling products without understanding the numbers behind them.
So yes...
Bezi needs to make a profit.
And I'm completely okay saying that.
My Finance Side Meets My Creative Side
This might actually be one of my favorite parts of building the brand so far.
Bezi lets me combine two sides of myself that don't always seem like they belong together.
There's Amber who loves:
Fitness. Fashion. Branding. Creating.
And then there's Amber with the finance degree who wants to open a spreadsheet and ask:
βOkay...but what's the margin?β π
Turns out you need BOTH when you're trying to build a real business.
Day 6: Putting Numbers Behind the Dream π€
Six days into building this brand:
Day 1: Starting the journey.
Day 2: Choosing the Bezi colors.
Day 3: Creating my first BZ pieces.
Day 4: Making product mockups.
Day 5: Building my Shopify product pages.
Day 6: Figuring out what these products should actually cost.
Every day, Bezi feels a little less like an idea...
And a little more like a business.
But tomorrow is the day I've been waiting for.
Because it's time to stop looking at these products through a computer screen.
Day 7: ORDERING MY FIRST SAMPLES. π¦π¬
That's when we're going to find out whether what looks good online actually feels good in real life.
Day 6 complete. π€
